things i didn't learn from the bell jar or girl, interrupted

  • ps: kara, you always need to have quarters on you.
  • kj: i didn't know that. i couldn't even make a phone call.
  • ps: you also need to know phone numbers to call. we used to sharpie them on our arm. the first thing they do is take away your phone.
  • kj: they took away my phone!
  • ps: yeah they took away your phone!
  • kj: oh.

so am i the only person here who has never been in jail?

  • [redacted 1]: i've never been in jail, i've only been in juvee.
  • [redacted 2]: i've never been in jail, i've just been held.
  • kj: so i still have cred.
  • [redacted 1]: you've been incarcerated, it counts.

the back cover of shulamith firestone’s airless spaces, published by chris kraus and semiotext(e) in 1998. the dedication says “for lourdes cintron, as promised in the hospital.” the dialectic of sex is amazing and i am taken by people who do just one memorable thing and also by people who refuse.

"being at teen vogue was like being in the hospital. i kept being like, ‘i can’t believe i get to see this.’"

i was explaining to my dad and stepmother about how even though i’m totally done working at magazines i am so glad i did it just because everything was so ridiculous and crazy, like the time i got to the office and my assistant informed me that i was wearing the same raffia heels as my boss, which couldn’t happen any day and especially not a day when we had a meeting with anna, and so i scrambled to switch shoes with the accessories editor, and i was relieved that they were also prada, though i was really bummed that they were flats. i felt a similar frisson of exclusivity and inanity when i was in the hospital and my new roommate came in around 2 AM and i was really overly solicitously like “HI, I’M KARA” and she was like “i’m lisa” and i wanted to laugh, because i was still kind of out of it, and because i kept thinking, well, you don’t look like angelina jolie, who plays lisa in girl, interrupted, which i didn’t say, obviously. then she told me that she hears voices and she once broke her boyfriend’s jaw and another time she broke both of his legs and that she eats a lot of sugar whenever she’s in the hospital because she has a coke problem. “you’re going to see a lot of shit in here,” she said, which is the same thing a guy had said to me a few hours earlier, which was sort of shitty enough, since i don’t really like guys talking to me. but lisa ended up being mostly great and anyway, i’m not sorry i saw it
